Practical Tips While Teaching

by Yasmeen Jumani in Education, August 27, 2008

If two way communications is taken place in classroom, student’s retention and interaction power both can be increased easily.

Being a teacher, it’s very important to engage students in learning at all stages. However, Student’s attention has a limited capacity and especially in secondary classes, they fed up and get bored quickly. It has also proven that after 8 minutes of constant speaking, listeners can be frustrated to become self-alert till the end therefore it is very important for teacher, of all levels, to enhance student “s retention power as much as possible because low energy won”t allow students to take interest in studies and perform tasks effectively. A passionate teacher always keep this in mind that children of any age require fulltime engagement. Consequently there should be some way forward to keep our class lively and interactively Following are some of the practical “Tips” where teacher help their students to enjoy learning.

  1. It is healthier to start our class with Recap; this would help learners to at least pay attention to some extend
  2. It would be more appropriate to highlight key terminologies on the board with many designs. As a result students could learn that piece of information with some sort of symbols.
  3. Often front seated students get more attention of teacher while sitting on the back seated students have less chance to get teacher’s eye contact therefore seating arrangements should keep on changing accordingly
  4. While delivering lessons in class, we can ask students to think and reflect further beyond and present it with innovative ideas in next class
  5. It would be more appropriate to relate ideas with student’s practical life where they can find suitable and meaning full connection
  6. Some times we may do like this: whatever discussions or information share among students in a class by teachers, we can tell students to describe learning in their own words, pictures, rhyme, poem or can relate with any metaphor
  7. At the time of distribute notes, or marking Answers from book, if we just highlight the key points that will enable students to relate and recall some on the major things
  8. Taking notes is also good strategy to remember about the class happening,
  9. Once a while we can just give some topics to the class and tell them to work in pair and present the central idea or summary in their own words (this will help them a lot)
  10. Teacher’s own motivation and enthusiasm can plays significant role
  11. Often it seems or its general practice that teachers assign task after the delivering lecture. If proposed assignment could be mentioned before initiating the lecture I believe, students would pay most of their attention in class throughout because they have to perform their role after the session.
  12. As teachers, it’s necessary to keep on changing our strategy as per the need because monotonous way doesn’t attract learners hence we should also looking for new methods and strategies in pedagogical aspect (how to perform content)
  13. After the end of the session/lesson, teachers may ask students about “the learning of today” which will help them to recall and rethink
  14. If two way communications is taken place, student’s retention and interaction power can be increased easily
