Read 2010 One Nation Reading Together
This programme is organized to relive and inculcate reading habit among students, especially the upper secondary students. Today, very few students read magazines or books because they prefer other kinds of entertainments such as the portable playstation, karaoke or counter strike. Hence, they find it difficult to get indulge in a reading session. In the long run, this young generation will not be able to function effectively as the leaders of tomorrow if they continue to disregard reading as one of the ways to gain knowledge.
‘Reading is the source of all knowledge’, which is relatively true. Through reading, one can gain access to valuable knowledge which is essential to the continuation of human kind. Thus, in accordance to the objectives and hope of the country to its people, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Titingan, Tawau organized the “Read 2010 One Nation Reading Together” programme to inculcate and to relive the reading behaviour among students.
This programme was conducted by Pn. Hifzan Aziz who is in-charge of the school’s resource centre. The reading programme was officiated by Tn. Hj. Badarun bin Mad Jahiri, principal of the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Titingan, Tawau. He shared his experience in the “Doktor Nilam” slot by talking about the advantages of reading to the students. Only the students from form 3, 4 and 5 were involved in the programme since it was launched from 9.30a.m. until 10.04a.m. The students were asked to bring their own story books to school before the programme while those who forgot to bring their books could lend from the resource centre. Students who participated in the programme were given a bookmark or a sticker by the Scholastic as prove of participation. In addition, a certificate is also given.
SMK Titingan is lucky because the school administrators give their full support in the programme. As a result, the reading programme was a success. Teachers also participated in the 33.5 minutes programme where they sat together reading their favourite books. Not only that, the principal as well as the senior assistants also joined in. A video recording was taken when the students and teachers were engrossed in their reading. It will be sent to Kuala Lumpur as prove that the school has carried out the reading programme.
According to Pn. Hifzan, the programme is one of the ways to rekindle the passion of reading among students. The upper secondary students especially seem to have forgotten the importance of reading in their lives. Even though the “Nilam” programme is carried out every year, students still read very few books. Hence, such activity is very good to foster the reading habit among them. The school’s resource centre is equipped with various types of books which consist of hundreds of titles. Students should take advantage of the amenities provided by the school.
On the other hand, a student, Noor Saifah said that it would be great if the time allocated for reading during the programme be lengthen so that students will have enough time to finish their book. Likewise, she also agreed that the programme was beneficial to students as students nowadays read very few books because they prefer surfing in the internet or Facebook to reading. She hopes that this type of activity will be carried out again in future.
As a conclusion, the 33.5 minutes programme is actually enough for a person to complete his or her reading. What matters is the reader’s reading skills such as skim and scan. Thanks to Scholastic for this beneficial activity.
