Reluctant Reader

How to get people to read.

Children may like to read what they are interested in but sometimes the child does not like to go into reading more than he has to, his is reluctant to go the extra mile in pursuing a reading project. I would get students telling me what they had for homework and there was an attitude that they would not do anything else. To get them to follow your lead, they not only have to find the work interesting, it has to be at their level and applicable to what is expected from them. Here are the ways to improve the will to read.

  1. Parents should be able to interpret what children like to read and what they don’t.  If the child is doing what is required, reward them for their effort
  2. I would not reward by spoiling the child but by showing him how understanding can be beneficial because you can meet and compare social concepts between different  groups.
  3. Let the child try to give you the article from a few phrases extracted from the reading. The child gets a sense of self-esteem and is better oriented toward telling a complete tale.
  4. Try to find out what the person likes to read so that can be brought up in class with appropriate interrogative words.
  5. Complement the student for their effort even if has just barely scratched the surface. Some students measure their progress on how much they may have improved.
  6. Nowadays parents pay their kids to get a higher education after college. Where is the incentive for the child to know that when you work, you appreciate the money you earn. By doing homework on his own the child can develop a good sense of independence.
