Remote Education in Far-flung Areas

Remote education is needed in far-flung areas. Modernization has not yet reached those places.

This is not about remote education in the sense that people avail of education online. This is about remote education in the far-flung areas.

The Need for Remote Education

Many indigenous peoples of the world are still very much detached from centers of civilization. Indeed, remote education in terms of online log-in is possible but many communities still could not find access to or could not afford such technology. For this reason, small children have to travel great lengths just to keep up with the outside world. The 7-kilometer walk seems to be a normal part of their life just like what the kids below do everyday.

Fig. 1. Children walking on sleepers or barefooted to attend their classes in a remote place in western Philippines.

Some of them go barefooted just to attend classes. Education is a priority to them. You can see their faces turn sour as they see the camera. It’s a sign of unfamiliarity with the modern gadgets of civilization.

City kids are much more fortunate in terms of availing the education they need to go through the challenges of modern living. But for the rural children, education is just a means to survive and interface with the modern world. Remote education online may help them keep up with the fast-changing times.

It’s heartbreaking to see the eagerness of children to go to school yet the government turns a blind eye. Thumbs up for this article!

Very informative write, it is so “stone age” not to be able to educate these children.
