In the United States, a teaching certification is handled by a State Board Of Education and the requirements are different for every state. A teacher who wishes to get certification must be a holder of a bachelor´s degree, and he should have a major in a specific subject like arts, science, English language and math. Along with these requirements a potential teacher must have gone through rigorous pedagogical methods coursework and also practiced the profession as a student teacher. Most states require that potential teachers take and pass standardized national or state level exams in the subjects they intend to teach. A state´s Educational Board may also require them to undergo local, state and or private organizations evaluation in their first years of teaching. Many states use progressive licensing methods like initial, stage 2, Rank 1, Professional, provisional and many more.

Some states demand more qualifications than the certification in order for a potential teacher to practice. There is a certificate which distinguishes the age group and student specialization of the class an individual intends to teach. It is noteworthy that elementary school teachers tend to teach many subjects, while those in higher academic institutions specialize on certain subjects, which they will teach.

To teach in a preschool, a potential teacher needs to have an Early Childhood Certificate. One needs an Elementary certificate to teach from kindergarten up to grade 9. For secondary school teacher, a secondary school certificate is required. The K-12 certificate is a requirement if an individual hopes to teach Grade K-12 which is Kindergarten to Grade 12 students. The last certificate is the Special Education Certificate. This certificate enables an individual to teach special education students from preschool to the age of 21. It is a specialized kind of certificate that requires dedication and a passion from the trainee’s side.

To get the above teaching certification, a potential teacher needs to go through almost similar procedures for all. Once a potential teacher has gone through an accredited course of the level he intends to teach, he should pass the subjects he intends to teach then pass the Assessment of Professional Teaching for that particular level. This requirement is not necessary if a potential teacher intends to get a teaching certification he will need to identify the level of education he would like to teach, and then go ahead and start practicing his teaching profession.
