School From Our View

An essay on why students should put effort into educating themeselves, inspired by President Barrack Obama’s speech to school student on education, written by a student herself.

September 8, 2009- Today was my first day of 8th grade, and I, like most normal middle school students, had been dreading the day since mid-August. Of course aside from seeing all my friends and classmates, school was one of the last places I wanted to be, aside from the Dentist’s office, though even then I enjoy getting the free toothbrushes.

At around noon, all of the students were submitted to various classrooms with televisions to watch President Obama’s Education speech. With this announcement, there came a loud groans from most all of my fellow classmates. I, on the other hand, was very looking forward to seeing this on cnn, partially because of Obama’s aptitude of presenting speeches, and partially because I’m a qualified government nerd.

When the speech was finished with (a moving speaking of goal setting, and working with effort) I had realized a few things. One, it was okay to fail. Failing, not entirely in the literal below standard grading means, was a part of learning. Failing is learning.

Two, it doesn’t matter where you start from, but where you finish. I had always thought I could never end up in an Ivy League college, because of my parent’s job in the service industry. And sure, parents are a part of where you end up in life- but they don’t control it. With a little more extra effort and work it is definitely a possibility for me to end up at Dartmouth or Harvard, on a scholarship.

And lastly, we the children of the United States, are the future of this country. Sure, that may seem like another cheesy line, but in all reality, it’s actually just common sense. If we all take the easy road in education and life, our country will soon just be full of high school dropouts, or retail store workers. Doctors will be far and few, businesses will plummet- the fate of the country is resting on our shoulders. That sounds like a lot of weight for a teenager, does’t it? But we all don’t have to be the next Jane Austin or George Washington or Thomas Edison to help our country. We could be accountants and writers, or bussiness people and carpenters, or even inventors, like the guy whose name we can never remember who invented toothpaste! We can be practically anything we want to be with our elementary school, middle school, high school, and college education.

So, fellow students- remember that english assignment you had been putting off?
