Schools Should Go “Green” Ideas

Here are a few ideas I came up with.

As you may know, schools exactly aren’t “green”. Some don’t have a lot of money either, but that’s not the point or the problem. I am just here to give you some ideas on how to make schools more efficient.

One tip that I would like to share, and so would a lot of other people, is getting recycling boxes for each and every room in the school. This is “green”, would cut down on trash, and satisfy other student’s ideas. A lot of people like trees and would love to see all paper recycled. As a student I throw away close to 50 or more papers a term. If you add all of this up it is worth getting simple recycle bins. Plus, put them in the cafeteria (for bottles, cans, etc.) would also be easier too.

Another issue I’d like to address is the power. Since you are limiting the heat in the winter and the air conditioning in the summer, we could for one hour a day turn one set of lights off. This is more cost efficient and “green”.

As for the technology aspect of things, we should have been using Linux, a free open source operating system. This is a great alternative to the current one the school is running on, Windows XP. Windows must have cost thousands to install for all of the computers. Also another alternative to Microsoft Office 2007 is Open Office; that too is free. If schools ever think of upgrading, please consider what can save thousands of dollars for the school.

To raise money, monthly raffle could be started. This would bring attention to the students of the school, and likely to have most of the school participating. Remember these are only suggestions/ideas, nothing more.

One big thing that I would love to see is the SGA inform the school what’s going on. One representative should tell their class new information and get their feedback to make the school run more smoothly. I have not once seen this happen [correct me if I’m wrong] but what is the point of it if we don’t get the consent of the people.
