Self-awareness Activity for Grade 1-6 Students

The Self-Awareness is important in the emotional development of children during the early childhood as it helps in the formation of self-concept of children. The Self-Awareness Workshop is designed for Grade 1-6 students. It will be implemented by a counsellor, social worker or pastoral care teacher (facilitator) in the school by using Self-Awareness Activities and Programs in group or classroom.

Duration: 1 hour

Objectives

The purpose of the Self-Awareness Workshop to help children find out more about themselves: to discover, recognize and understand their characters, strengths and limits through the use of Self-Awareness Activity. It helps children to increase their self-understanding.

Class Organization

The self-awareness workshop can be conducted in a class by a counsellor, social worker or pastoral care teacher to help students to increase their self-understanding. It is advised that 1-2 facilitators (counsellor or pastoral care teacher) to a class so they can follow up with the students who need help.

Procedure

The counsellor, social worker or pastoral teacher needs to set up some basic ground rules to facilitate sharing in a group or class. For instance, the ground rules of respect for one another, confidentiality, taking turn to share their feelings and thoughts at their comfort level will help the children to feel safe to participate in group activity.

The focus is on increasing the child’s self-awareness. A facilitator may begin with an ice-breaker game, where the children have to design their own name tag for self-introduction. They write down their name, hobbies and strengths in their personalized tags. It helps them to get to know one another through games.

The facilitator may pair up the children in discussion or sharing. It will help the child warming up and feel comfortable with sharing. Then, they start to introduce themselves about their name, interests, hobbies and favourite subjects in the group or class. The Self-Awareness Activity sheet will be given to children after the Self-Awareness Workshop to reinforce learning.

The facilitator needs to presence and available to provide the support to children. The facilitator needs to follow up with children who have faced problems in doing or completing the self-awareness activity and activity sheet.

In conclusion, the Self-Awareness Workshop is designed for Grade 1 -6 students with the guidance of counsellor or pastoral care teacher. It assists children in increasing their self-awareness and self-understanding. Therefore, the children will become more confident and it improves their self-esteem. The Self-Awareness Activity Sheet will be given to children after the Self-Awareness Activity to reinforce learning. It is as a tool to understand the children and support them in the journey of self-discovery.
