Should PE. be Mandatory in Schools?

A debate I made about PE in schools.

Physical education has often been a part of the educational curriculum that has been in question. Schools are having budget problems and cutting out physical education could help save some money. There are several arguments, pro and con, regarding whether to have physical education in school.

Physical education can be difficult for people that are not athletic. They may have a hard time competing with others. This could be discouraging and make someone feel they you cannot succeed. Some students in physical education have gotten injured. Kids with health problems are disadvantaged at playing sports. If you cannot get access to a water source to drink from you could possibly get dehydrated. Students with asthma get the same workout as the other kids do. For people with asthma, it is hard to bring and take your medication at school before exercise.

It has many drawbacks for the school’s budget because of having to hire gym teachers, buy the equipment and replace it when it gets broken. Many kids at the school have kicked the ball over the fence or on top of a roof and are unable to retrieve it, this may cause more troubles. Students may have gotten injured by spraining, straining, breaking or tearing a ligament.

Some unfit students who are running a mile may work their body too much and have to get breaks more often, which will negatively impact grades in school. If they were a 4.0 GPA in other classwork, it would drop their grade. One of the most serious problems is that if a student has exercised and is in need of water, but water is not readily available, they could potentiality pass out and go to the hospital for IVs.

PE can be a very good thing or bad thing depending on what fitness level you are at. Negative issues could include asthma/ bringing asthma medication to school, dehydration, leg injuries, and school budget cuts. Student’s grades in gym, especially if they have good grades in school, could effect their overall GPA harshly. You might like PE or not, but giving student’s an option whether to go would be nice.

I think the exercise part should be mandatory, but the games part could be optional. Not everyone likes to play baseball and sucks at it, so they can go play basketball if they want to, or nothing at all. It wasn’t “mandatory” to play the games in my P.E. but everybody absolutely had to do the exercises.

I agree that exercising should be mandatory as it is important to health. PE teachers can easily be mindful to the difference in fitness of some exceptions. However, I do not see how dehydration is a problem because it’s natural for PE teachers to constantly advice students to hydrate themselves. And in fact, conditions like asthma can be improved from exercise. As for playing games, it could be optional but exercising through games is where the fun generally lies.
