Should You Get Online Tutoring?
Online tutoring is something that has become increasingly popular in the last few years, is it right for you?
There are advantages to having someone tutor you online, but be aware that there may be circumstances when having someone come right to your home that may work better for certain situations. Of course, if you live in a remote area it may be difficult to find a tutor who is willing or able to travel the distance, especially if you are going to need him or her a few times a week. If there are no tutoring groups that are available at your high school, or you do not have transportation once the session is done, online tutoring may be your best (or only) option. Don’t think that you won’t get the same quality from an online tutor as compared to a personal, in-home one-you will if you do a little research before you hire anyone.

There are literally hundreds of websites that offer this service, and you may be a little confused when you first start to look. Browse some of the sites to get an idea of what is being offered, and what rates are being charged. Most of the tutors who are registered will have a public profile featured that will list their expertise in a particular area, any degrees they may have, grades they have achieved in that area, and recommendations from former students, teachers, or others who know them. Take all this into consideration before initiating contact or making a quick decision. It is generally a good idea to hire a tutor who has experience and knowledge in just one field of study. Many tutors listed will state that he or she is willing to tutor in many different subjects, but it is best to find one who has the expertise in the one you need help with.
For example, if you are having a hard time with math, it is a better idea to hire a tutor who has just math tutoring listed. Someone who also advertises English, science, or even social studies along with math may not be able to give you the more intensive sessions you might require because they are trying to spread themselves to thin over a wider area of study. Stick with someone who is an expert in your specific area of difficulty to get the most from your sessions. Check the recommendations of each tutor you are interested in, read their qualifications, and then make a decision to contact them through the service they are listed with. They, in turn, will get back to you once they receive your contact information, and you can ‘speak’ to them about what you need.

Another advantage of getting your tutoring this way is that your sessions can be scheduled at any time that is convenient to you. If you don’t have time during the day, or your evenings are busy, you can make arrangements with the person you hire to have your tutoring done at a later time. You can even have someone work with you on the weekend if this is the only time you have available. The internet makes it possible for tutoring sessions to be conducted anytime, from anywhere that has a computer available. Of course, working from home is the best idea, but you can even use the computer at a local library if that is all you have.
You will be expected to complete homework and other assignments assigned by your tutor from one session to the next. You will be able to speak with him or her in real time just by using a microphone, and you will be able to ask questions, get detailed explanations, and advice as to how you can overcome the obstacles that are in your academic way. Your tutor will set goals for you, and work with you to achieve them over time. They will keep a detailed progress report that you or your parents can view at anytime, track your progression as you go, and encourage you to be as successful as is possible. His or her goal is to get you through the difficulties you are having and make it possible for you to attain better grades, and eventually be able to successfully complete the work on your own.
