Simply Mcmaster – Guide for First Years

This is a guide for first year students going to McMaster come September. This walk-through is meant to ease nerves and share my experience at Mac.

Article 1: Simply McMaster

McMaster University, being one of Canada’s top 4 universities, attracts a lot of high school graduates each year. Come September there is always a fresh batch of nervous and excited first year students. This series of articles is meant to be a guide, a walkthrough, to a great first year at Mac. First off, no matter what happens you will definitely make some great memories at Mac and most of all you will have a fantastic first year. So why should you read these articles? Simply because they really juice out the fun and provide ideas to problems and concerns that some new first years may have. Now this is not some generic article written to sum up any university. With these articles not only do I hope to ease first years but also to encourage others to come to Mac.

So who should read these articles? – If you feel nervous or anxious right now thinking about McMaster, you should read these articles to prepare yourself. Also, if you feel excited and/or thrilled to be leaving home and venturing into the world on your own, you should also read these articles. Yes, these articles are meant to serve a broad audience. Yes, they cover a wide range of topics which will hopefully satisfy anyone’s first year appetite. And yes, you will find the answers you are looking for.

Who am I? – I am a McMaster student. I am going into second year and I write this with the sole intent of putting everything I felt and experienced in my first year in a form that is helpful to others. I, with a special friend Anne (made up name), have decided to share our highlights of McMaster and even to provide insight on different subjects such as moving in, frosh week, courses, restaurants on/off-campus, and much more.  We both feel that it is better if we stay anonymous because we are honestly too popular for our own good… :) .

- Guide (1) MOVING IN

– Section 1: Pre-Moving in

As September approaches it is almost time to kick off the Labour day weekend by moving into a residence on the Mac campus. But before the fun begins you must tackle the packing-phase. So the question is, WHAT DO I NEED TO TAKE WITH ME? What is important and what is not?  We all want to be certain of the things we need and things we do not. Before I provide a basic list of supplies that Anne and I found useful I would like to point out that no matter how hard you try you are not going to be able to bring everything you need in the first trip alone. Don’t freak out! You can always bring what you’re missing the next time around. You would be surprised at the amount of stuff that you can fit into a room in residence. Let’s begin.
