SMS and Social Networking Make Child Lazy to Read Books

A study conducted by the National Literacy Trust, based in the UK revealed there is a sharp decline in the reading book to ten-fold in children aged eight to 17 years than when they were in elementary school.

The survey of 18 thousand school children in Britain are also saying they prefer mobile phones and computers than books. In addition the study also showed 13 percent of children do not finish reading any books since one month later and was less than 50 percent of children ages 8 to 17 years of reading a novel every month.

Children prefer to read through technological devices, such as sms, email, and messaging in social networking. But digital books become the least popular choice for children. In this research revealed the children began to leave the habit of reading when you graduate from elementary school (SD).

Director of the National Literacy Trust Jonathan Douglas, reminding those who lack reading on childhood literacy could potentially have problems as adults. “We were worried that there will one in six adults who have literacy barriers, the worst is that they read at the level of an eleven years old,” he said as quoted by the Telegraph, Tuesday, August 22, 2011.

He suggested that children be assisted by providing reading material, so they began to read and love books. “This could change their lives, give hope and new ideals,” he said.
