One important indicator correspondence MBA’s commercialization is the formation of partnerships with for-profit entities. For public institutions, partnerships often seem to take the form of collaborations with other nonprofit MBA courses institutions, or with other nonprofit organizations and government agencies. Furthermore, we saw from the research literature review in executive MBA course that some institution view online MBA as an administrative innovation, one that allows them to serve more students for less money. In contrast to this point of view, many surveyed in the current study do not see distance learning as an innovations in this way, and therefore perhaps not as a way to increase revenue.
One respondent described how distance learning is changing the requirement of physical presence on campus, and even leading to salary adjustments because of non-participation in institutional governance. It’s touching on a whole new thing. We have faculty teaching their entire load at a distance. Historically there was resistance to distance education. It was seen as a threat to job security. That is not so much a problem now. We work with the faculty and are concerned that what we do is high quality, and that it is equivalent in terms of content and academic integrity to what do in class.
To better ascertain the degree to which distance learning administrative practices are changing the university- leading it toward more of a corporate approach- interviewees were questioned about some of their practices and general organizational philosophy. Even today the only program that we have that is the same as what other people have is the executive MBA. And I told them that it was a bad idea, the world doesn’t need another distance learning MBA. But our people wanted to do it and our School of Management runs that on their own. All other programs in MBA courses are unique. The new school will use market research to see where there is demand. At that point we go to the faculty to see if they have the content, and if they do we will work with them to turn it into another format.
The online MBA programs concern was especially focused on the corporate market. A lot of students don’t mind taking distance learning courses, but they want to know they’re taking it from a real institution, that there are real bricks and mortar behind it someplace. And if they want to they can come to campus and visit and know that they are a part of it.
