All of us wish our children are smarter than us, don’t we? How to stimulate the young brain? Are there ways by which we can stimulate the young brain? Yes…you can easily stimulate the young brain with the help of flashcards? Let us take a look at what flashcards are and how they help in stimulating the young brain.
Scientific research shows that the brain development is at the maximum between 3 months and 6 years of age. Do you know why? It is during this period that the brain of the child is open to learn new thing and can absorb incredible amount of information. When the child receives exposure to a wide variety of topics during this age, a content rich library is created, to which the child will have subconscious access for the rest of their life. What you teach your child in this period is definitely going to have much impact on the child’s life because children perceive the world largely through the dominant right hemisphere of their brain (the left hemisphere becomes increasingly dominant thereafter). You can start teaching your child as early as 3 months; the only thing that is essential for stimulating the young brain with flashcards is that your child should be able to focus on the object it sees, which almost happens between 3 to 6 months of age.
I used flashcards to stimulate the brain of my child and it really did wonders; therefore, sharing this article on flashcards and how they help in stimulating the young brain.
Flashcards – what are they?
Flashcards help in improving the visual or the photogenic memory, associating things and comprehension of a child. Flashcards activities are very simple and children love doing them. A child learns things in a fun way through flashcards. You can create flashcards for any subject of your choice and can teach the child.

Flashcards – how to create them?
Flashcards are small white cards with pictures or words on them depending on what you teach. If you are teaching about wildlife or public health or good habits, you can create flashcards with pictures associated with the subject you are teaching. If you wish to teach languages, you can get the words printed on the flashcards. Remember, you can have either one picture or one word per card.
There are various ways to create flashcards; these include:
- Creating these flashcards all by yourself
- Get the flashcards printed from the Internet
- Get in touch with those who teaches on what flashcards are; they themselves will create the flashcards for you

Teaching with flashcards:
You can teach almost any subject using flashcards. There are flashcards for math, science, languages, general knowledge, colors, foods, domestic animals, wild animals to name a few. You can create as many flashcards as you want depending on what you wish to teach. Let me tell you how I used flashcards to teach my child.
My mother taught me what flashcards are and how to use them. She herself prepared the flashcards and gave it to me for teaching my child. I didn’t have to do the cards myself.
Take any five categories of cards at any one time and ensure that these categories are not related to one another in any way. For example, taking wild animals and domestic animals together will only confuse the baby. From each category, take five cards; you will now have 25 cards with you. Show these flashcards to your baby and tell him/her what it is. Don’t take more than a second for a card; this means a total of 25 seconds for 25 cards. Repeat this activity no more than 3 times a day with regular intervals of anywhere between 4 and 5 hours.
Children who use flashcards to learn try to understand things rather than simply memorizing the facts. They are curious about things happening around them; therefore, their brain is more active. I know how useful these flashcards are as they really have helped in stimulating the young brain of my 4-year old.

Great article. Flashcards work on adults, too. My daughter is going to be 39 this year and she has been making flashcards of foreign languages.
