Students From Dorchester County Maryland Receive Grants for 2010

CAMBRIDGE, MARYLAND–The Dorchester Elks Lodge 223 on March 9, 2010, gave grants to parents for six local young people who are currently furthering their education. The students are Kristina Ackerman, Monique Adams, TyKera Cornish, Kelsey Mills, De’Montray Slacum and Montrel Thompson.

The need-based grants were in the amount of $1,000 each. Those present enjoyed a light dinner after the event.

The presentation would have been made last month, but due to the inclement weather it had to be postponed until Tuesday. Much of Dorchester County had received almost two feet of snow in February, 2010.

Prior to the presentation, Daughter Ruler for Progressive Dorchester Temple 224 Gloristeen Pinkett said that education is the key and encouraged the students to pursue their dreams, whatever they may be.

“It always gives me great pleasure when we can do something for the youth,” said Exalted Ruler Carlton Stanley.

“It gives us great pleasure when they come back and tell us what they have been doing.”

Above is a picture of some who attended the presentation. Seated from the left are Dorothy M. Applications for this grant will be available in the guidance offices of Dorchester High Schools by the end of this month. Students may also apply for the Dorchester Lodge’s oratorical contest which will be held this fall. Vocational students can apply for the Karen L. Wilson grant.

The Dorchester Elks Lodge 223 encourages all students of Dorchester County, Maryland, to apply for these opportunities. More information regarding these grants can be had by contacting the guidance offices of the schools.

The Dorchester Elks Lodge 223 is located at 618 Pine Street in Cambridge, Maryland.
