Teachers’ Unions are Destroying the Government School System

Union leadership has consistantly blocked free market competitive influences which would have an immediate, positive impact in the classroom. By doing so, they have placed the priorities of the unions above the interests of the students.

The simple truth is that private schools simply perform better than public schools, and this poses a serious threat to teacher’s unions. Wherever the free market rears its head, unions will be disadvantaged because they are not designed to rise above the competition. Their only effectual recourse is to legislate the competition out of existence by lobbying the political scene with millions of tax dollars. This approach is quite destructive if the intended result is the perfection of a product or service, and there is absolutely no reason to assume it can work in the classroom. By effectively splitting the classroom into two camps, each with their own respective priorities, unions have seriously damaged the student-teacher bond for financial motives.

If a failing school continues to receive the same resources as a successful school, true change will never be realized. Educator icon John Dewey once said, “No man’s credit is as good as his money”, and empty promises that “more money, more teachers” will solve this problem seems like a loan on bad credit. If these complacent unions continue to consume more and more available tax resources, while refusing to countenance drastic improvement measures, then these unions deserve to fail. These institutions lost their credibility the moment they decided to choose their own interests over that of their students, and until they decide to abandon their obstructionist policies and become part of the solution, America’s schools will be better off without them.

I’m sfraid I don’t know enough about teachers unions to comment on them. I do believe we have some very good teachers and some who should not be teaching. I think the good ones who give the most value to the students should be rewarded.
