Teaching Change Management in the Classroom: NTeQ Introduction

Effectively integrating technology into class curriculum is essential to developing students who are able to become productive members of society. NTeQ( iNtegrating Technology for inquiry) was designed to enable teachers to accomplish the need of successfully combining technology into the curriculum.

The NTeQ model is “composed of 10 major components . The components fit together to create lessons that are student-centered, problem-based, authentic, and dependent on the integration of technology” (Morrison, 2005).  While NTeQ has the potential to be an effective tool for lesson development, Learning Team C will uncover three major problems with  NTeQ that teachers may encounter when using the model.

The first issue that is made apparent when analyzing the structure of the NTeQ Lesson Plan is the nature of the design. The information is delivered in a formal fashion that is similar to post graduate course work. While this is certainly professionally acceptable, it is not at all practical for the classroom environment. On the NTeQ main website (www.NTeQ.com), lessons are indexed by subject area and grade level. The lessons for 6th grade classrooms are just as involved as those for high school classrooms. This has the appearance of offering far too much information for the presentation of a lesson.

For example, many of the samples on the website display lessons in the following list fashion: Learning Objectives, Problem Nature, Problem Data, Notes on Using Data, Problem Statement, Data Manipulation Instructions, Integration Strategies, Organizational Strategies, Elaboration Strategies, Presentation Results, Activities, Supporting Activities, and Assessment. The average teacher teaches six classes per day. And the concept of reading, memorizing and putting into practice six separate lessons of this layout is staggering.

NTeQ lessons should be modified to include more grading of material for differentiated instruction. If a teacher uses the model plans, they will definitely need adjustments.
