Teaching Standards, NCLB & Changes in Technology
Theoretically, if every teacher in the United States could agree an issue regarding the national standards, then there could be localized discussion by county which would then per an agreed upon deadline, be compiled and sent to the state. Each state would make a determination to needs and advisable changes. Those compilations will then be presented to the Department of Education whom would then cross reference against the No Child Left Behind Act. This would eliminate justifications by districts that standards may not apply to them and create the needed baseline for the development of nationalized assessment.
This would allow districts to properly map their curriculums online so that teachers could access via secure server to make additions or changes. It would allow parents to see what their students should have learned and what they will be learning. It should also be made accessible to students for reference purposes with homework being attached to lessons within the maps and other reference materials being made available per lesson. Teachers would only have to set up their entire lesson plans one time as they would only need to make changes each year rather than designing and inputting all 180 days worth of lessons.
The standardized tests would no longer be something that the students fear or dread as they will genuinely be prepared for them in accordance with their levels of ability. The use of standardized report cards would enable students, parents and teachers to accurately measure individual abilities both as they quantify intelligence of a student and how that student compares to the rest of the nation. Such a system could be implemented now using the technology currently available. Now is the time for education to use the available resources of today’s society and time for educators to believe in educational reform.
