The Importance of Higher Education
On the importance of continuing education and gaining education beyond high school.
Education – defined by Webster’s Dictionary – is “the gradual process of acquiring knowledge or gaining information.” True education, nonetheless, is so much more than this, though the concept is seldom realized before the level of higher education. Acquiring knowledge is the fundamental axiom of education, yet the ultimate goal cannot be reached until this point.
As the process of cultivating the mind continues, the final phase is that of the “finish work”, much like that in a construction project, a degree in education that is only reached by furthering one’s schooling in a manner beyond the secondary level. Only the sincerely educated understand the ideal that learning merely begins in formal education. While, it is the continuance of learning that creates a scholar, an idea predominately captured by minds mature enough to grasp the concept-those of higher education, as those are exposed to their true erudition in career fields. To become a scholar, recognized or not, one must continue learning beyond primary, secondary, into post-secondary education, and beyond.
Simply stated, the world of higher education allows one to find his calling and proceed from that point. The notable Charles W. Eliot captures the purpose of scholarship as he states, “The fruit of liberal education is not learning, but the capacity and the desire to learn, not knowledge, but power.” This is unequivocally the most genuine, distinct importance of higher education, to grasp not only the concept but also the passion.
