The Importance of Higher Standards in Math Education in The U.s

When it comes to math, a high number of U.S. lag behind students in other countries. Although the solution to this problem is not a simple one, raising standards is one important way in which many schools could use some improvement.

Having higher standards in U.S. mathematics education has the potential of assuring that all students gain a more solid background in basic math functions as early as possible, in order to provide as many students as possible with the opportunity to have at least some minimal exposure to more advanced math as well.

While basic math is something most of us who have a solid knowledge of it take for granted and use in our lives regularly, more advanced math gives students the tools needed to be able to solve problems (not just math problems but all problems), using logic and other skills gained in more advanced math. Having at least some exposure to advanced math can change a way a person thinks. In general, an appreciation of math’s role in the Universe is not gained through learning just the most basic math; and the person who has not gained an understanding of that has been short-changed in a number of ways and subjects not related, at first glance, to mathematics.

Since – contrary to what so many math-phobics believe – a solid background in math is an integral part of any education, a country like the United States should maintain a commitment to encouraging that solid math background for all students.
