The Road to Reading

Anyone who feels they would like to be a better reader is able to do so in a few simple steps. This applies to both students with learning differences and adults. There are easy self designed tutorials available.

The road to reading better does not have to be a difficult one.  Many  learning styles vary and that is why a number of different techniques need to be used to improve speed, phonics and comprehension when studying or learning new topics.  This applies to adults, students labeled with learning problems, GED, or adults who just want to enjoy and feel more comfortable reading.

The first step is to read and respond to what was read each day.  Keep a reading journal of sorts.  Read newspaper articles, short clippings, internet articles or even cereal boxes.  Just write something about the topic, and make note of any words that were not understood.  Younger students should look up difficult words and use them in their own sentences.  Older students should just keep a word journal and reflect on it as new words come up.

Speed helps make reading more fluent.  To increase reading speed, choose something simple to read and try to read it as fast as you can, timed one minute.  Keep track of how many words were read in that time and try to improve on the speed daily.  Even if words are missed, the idea of moving the eyes rapidly can actually train the brain to improve speed.

Reading aloud is a great way to improve reading skills.  Find a partner who is patient and tandem read a play or dialogue with that person.  This builds confidence, speed and accuracy.  Use the same dialogue over a one week period and then try reading it alone to the partner.  The best dialogues come from children’s books.

Just enjoy reading.  Choose material relevant to you and your lifestyle.  There is nothing unusual about wanting to improve reading.  Take the first step.
