The Teacher Newsletter: How to KISS
The idea of teachers creating a classroom newsletter is nothing new and the divide between technologically savvy teachers and those who do not use computers is drastically closing. And with constant updates to free resources both in software and online, there is really no excuse. Every teacher needs to have a newsletter or its equivalent.

Remember K.I.S.S., Keep It Simple Stupid? Well, this is actually a simple activity that can be done using templates. On any of the 2000 or later versions of Microsoft Word, there is a wizard option as well as basic template designs in single, double or triple column formats. This would be a great starting point to design the newsletter but there is an even easier way which offers even more options that require even less work.
If you have not yet checked out the actual www.microsoft.com website, check it out. Apart from having all of the latest updates for your software for free, they add free templates for each piece of software daily and divide them into applicable categories. If you look for the “teacher” section, you will find everything from lesson plan templates to newsletters. And if none of those meet your liking, there is an entire section filled with hundreds of free newsletter templates.
Everything from design, color, graphics, fonts, text blocks and page formatting options are already done for you. All you have to do is type in the text! With a little creativity you can have a letter from the teacher, student updates, student of the month, lesson of the month, lesson review, a needs list for donations… The concepts are limitless!
The added bonus of creating this apart from keeping your parents informed is impressing them with your computer abilities. You know who else will be impressed… your principal! Follow these quick little steps, grab the free stuff from the internet and take your classroom to the next level.
