The Top Five “Green” Colleges in America

Do you want to go to a really “sweet” college? How about one that’s eco-friendly?

Colleges that are eco-friendly, environmentally proactive, energy conscious and actively involved in reduce-reuse-recycle waste management are in demand by many students headed to college these days. “Sierra” the eco-conscious magazine of The Sierra Club, has issued their ratings of the best “Green” Colleges across America.

Here are their top 5 “Green” Colleges:

  1. Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont is number one and here is why. They use wind turbines to supply 25% of the school’s recycling center’s energy. Middlebury also recycles 60% of its waste.
  2. University of Colorado at Boulder in Boulder, Colorado is number two. School tuition includes loaner bikes and campus shuttles run on biodiesel. Interestingly, about 85% of the school’s energy is run on natural gas.
  3. University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont is number 3. Over 35% of all the food served in the school food services is secured from local farmers.
  4. Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina takes the number 4 spot. There are no football games or wild fraternities at this school. Here students are engaged in the school’s organic farming and environmentally aware building endeavors.
  5. Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington is the fifth place winner for the Sierra Magazine ranking. The campus is full of environmental and social justice organizations that take their causes extremely serious.

Well there are the top 5 “Green” Colleges according to the Sierra Club. Check for yourself some of the great energy and environmental things your Alma Mater is engaged in presently and be proud!

I’ll bet most of you do not realize NYU buys more green energy than any other college in America. Start researching and be amazed!
