Project brief

Our project brief was to perform a theatre in education to an audience year 4 at Manner primary school

Introduction

The project we had to tackle was to devise a play to suit a year 4 class about identity. This task we tackled was hard for us as a group because everyone had to do their job right. What I & the rest of the group had to do to make this play happen is participate and give ideas. We had to finish devising, sculpting and polishing of our play by the date of, June 21st 2010

Work shop with Charlotte Bailey

To help tackle this task we had someone coming in from a theatre company, called “Change Collective” the lady who came to help us with, was named Charlotte Bailey. With Charlotte We got to gather as a group and decided to use forum theatre.

Forum theatre

Forum theatre is a theatre that u can change and bend the ending of the play without harming the story line.

With Charlotte Bailey we did a serial of exercises to help us adapt to the habitat of forum theatre some of them were;

·         Parachute exercise

·         Status envelopes

·         Character flashbacks

Status Envelopes

We did this exercise because it helped us with showing how we judge people without knowing them, according to their status. This is important in devising a piece of play, because you have to act your status because it has huge impact on the audience, it give the image of the character your playing, look genuine and realistic not only that but it makes the play more interesting to watch for the audience.

An example of high and low status is, a poor tramp (being the lower status) talking with a doctor (higher status). Would the tramp speak stranded fluent English with the doctor? Or with would the doctor speak “slang” with the tramp? This gave us ideas about the final performance. some of these were,

·         To speak stranded English with the teacher – this is important because it relates with real life details which again make the play more realistic.
