Top 10 Tips for Teachers at Parent Conferences : Part Three

Part 3: As a teacher there are many wonderful things to discuss with parents of your students, but there can also be the not-so-wonderful awkward things that come up during parent teacher conferences. Here are ten tips that will help you prepare and progress positively through those meetings.

5. Keep Open Communication Throughout the School Year: Parent conferences shouldn’t be the only time that they get to hear and see what is going on in the classroom. Yes, we expect our students to run home and proudly tell of all their accomplishments but not all them will, and most will not recount the events exactly as they had happened. Consider making weekly tip sheets that keep parents informed or develop a newsletter. If you are able to include pictures of the students in class, wonderful. If not, then add appropriate clip art to keep it fun and relative. When conference time rolls around you can focus on the student and not everything you have done for an entire year in class.

6. Parent Praise: It is important to give praise to parents for what they do. Just as we enjoy positive affirmations that we are having a positive effect on their child, parents like to know that how they are reinforcing school work at home is making a difference. Make notes as to when a student makes a significant increase in learning and you may be able to correlate that improvement with something that the parent did at home. Then you can take that method that the student identified with and teach in that manner so as to increase the amount of retention the student will have on any given lesson.
