Union Probe Results Still on Hold

Followers of the saga of Union council member Tom Gerlach will have to wait a little longer to hear the results of an investigation of him.

In December, a probe was initiated about allegations that Gerlach had released confidential information from the council’s executive sessions. The results of the investigation were placed on the council’s agenda Jan 10, when members voted to table public discussion and action until the March 6 meeting. Reasons cited were lack of a written report from investigator Gary Leppla and fatigue from an unusually long meeting and executive session.

The council reviewed Leppla’s findings during the executive session.

On Jan 6, the council learned Gerlach was on a Florida vacation and voted again to table the findings, this time because of his absence.

Gerlach said the vacation had been planned months in advance, but did not mention it to the council Jan. 18 when the matter was placed on the agenda.

Not only was Leppla unavailable at the Jan. 20 meeting, but Gerlach didn’t make it, either.

“I gave them a memo, which my wife dropped off to the mayor,” Gerlach said the next day. “I’ve had health problems involving the fact that I’m having problems reading or even seeing. It’s allergy and asthma related.”

Gerlach said his eyes were almost swollen shut.

“It makes it hard to read without a magnifying glass,” he said.

He said he should be at the next meeting.

The results of the probe and subsequent council action have been placed on the agenda for the fourth time for April 10.
