Vocation Thought Among Rural Students
There are more than 39000 jobs are defined in the Indian National Classification of Occupation a huge number but not more than few tens jobs are on the figure tips of job seekers and their parents. May be as they come in contact with few selective job persons like teacher, doctors, nurses, clerks etc. remaining thousands jobs are out public mind.
While I was in teaching job in rural school, conducted a survey to find out the trend prevailing among students of high school education
Seven Hundred Students were asked to reply open ended questions and there replies based on which ground.
Some of the outcomes are here:
Students of the rural are wished (41%) to Doctors after school education and surprisingly to establish as they are not aware of the fact as what they have to do after their matriculation. Only what is known to them is that they want to be doctors or compounders or nurses. Why they wished to be these they have their opinions as persons with these occupations are rich nothing beyond this thought. When they were asked as they have to put much labour and the study hard and only few percent of total student population get through but current subjects are not aware of this and they changed the thought as if doctors are not possible they can become compounder or other para-medical personals.
More then 29% of student population under study wished to be clerical personals. Being the simplest entry to jobs without much or labour and education. They are of the concept as for clerical jobs only typing and shorthand training is enough. To their concept this is also good paying jobs in both the ways over and under the table. Being the minimum education is 10+2 education and with little knowledge of Computer word processing and manual typing is enough to enter the arena. Only 2% of sample found aware of Executive and administrative jobs.
About 16% of sample proposed to be teachers as these days teachers are well paid and students feel that there is no extra responsibility on the shoulder of a teacher because it is the personal labour of the students which make the get through the examinations.
Not more than 9% wished to do the work of farmer as this their parental work and there is nothing to do for than.
10% students opted for computer based occupations. And as few as 5% desired to be designers and other works
The pungent outcome may the result of lack of guidance services in rural are of India. Though Employment department is equipped with vocation guidance services yet found un-resulted and seems to be failed. They have their own restrictions. Any way guidance to students seems to urgent and must to develop their thoughts and to make them aware of occupational world.
