Ways for Teachers to Lead a Positive Classroom
The old adage, “You reap what you sow,” is especially true in the classroom. Remember that teachers are human and all humans are subject to bad days, negative life experiences and crabby moods. The responsibility of being a teacher includes a hidden proviso that says “leave your life at the door.” So how can a teacher do this?
First off, please do not think that a teacher should be a robot with no emotion nor should they be a vision of eternal happiness. If you have an especially difficult day, inform your class. As long as it is not a habit, the class should respond favorably by demonstrating model behavior.
Here are some ideas on how to maintain a positive classroom:
- Have high expectations for all students
- Recognize all accomplishments
- Involve parents whenever possible to any degree available
- When a student has a bad day, be there for them
- Maintain clear rules
- Set the example as a positive role model
- Greet your students when they come into your classroom
- Be sure there are clear consequences to negative actions
- Bring something that makes you happy into your room and leave it on your desk
- Have pictures of your family in the room
- Share good news in your personal life with your students
- Speak highly of students in the halls
By following these rules for yourself and also coming up with rules that are more appropriate to you, the classroom will be a happier place. This way, when that bad day does come along, it can be handled gracefully. Who knows, you may enjoy the positive environment so much that you forget about your worries.
