What are the Requirements to Enroll at an Online Degree Program?

If you want to enroll at an online degree program, and the same goes for the campus ones, you have to meet some basic requirements. Having in mind that you do not have to be at the University physically, and in most cases not in the same time as others, requirements which deal with your presence and time are not important in online education.

However, this only goes for physical presence! Your presence is still required, the only difference being that now you have to be present on-line. In order to do this you must have a computer with high-speed internet connection. In many cases even the dial-up would work, but if you are serious about your education, you will definitely try to avoid frustration which can be caused by slow download of your learning materials. There are some people who even took online classes without having a computer at home (some of them used computers and Internet in public libraries, some did that from work), but only they knew how much easier their life would have been if they had done it from home. Also, your computer should be able to play multimedia files, to have enough storage space, DVD rom and (in some cases) a webcam. Some institutions demand that their students have particular software installed on their computers (usually Office, Acrobat and the like) and sometimes they give specific software packages to their students. Ask the representative of the university whether that institution has some particular demands in relation to hardware or software. From our experience, a standard computer + a fast Internet connection work in most cases.

Apart from that, you have to meet academic requirements. If you want to enroll a Bachelor online degree program you must have such qualifications to enroll such a course. Those requirements do not differ much from the campus programs (after all, you will get a bachelor degree as do those who study on campus) so check those or ask a representative of the university/college you are thinking of enrolling and they will give you details about academic requirements.

Thirdly, and possibly most importantly, ask yourself whether you fulfill personality requirements to enroll online education programs. Pursuing your degree online will give you a lot of freedom, but can you cope with all that? Are you self-disciplined and can you keep your motivation high, even if there are no friends or classmates around you all the time? What do you do when you can not solve a problem? Can you wait for help? – have this in mind as well, since you will most likely have to wait for help of professors or tutors in online environment since communication is still conducted by e-mail in most cases. This last set of requirements will not keep you out of online education institutions, but they will prevent you from completing your studies successfully – and therefore you should really make a good self-assessment and think of the ways to overcome problems.

Finally, many people forget that online education also require you to spend some time studying. Those who work and want to change careers are sometimes not aware of the fact that if they are serious about studying they will have to invest a lot of time, not only money in that process.
