What is Education?

I am taking classes to be an educator. This was my first draft/ outline for my education class. This thesis, or idea, will be more thought out and over 40 pages when I am done with school and will be getting my PHD. I’m posting this because I believe it should be an idea any parent or educator should take into consideration. You may or may not enjoy this piece. It is very opinionated and yet as neutral as I could make it. Enjoy.

What is Education?

I believe education should come off as extra parenting on a massive scale. Parenting as in a guidance and teaching of morals, laws, and to help people better understand their world; to teach them how to think, strive, and figure things in the “real-world,” as well as the classroom, on their own. Every educator, just as parents, wants to see all of their students succeed.

Humans are interesting beings. Every individual learns in a different way. Why should the classroom teach only a few students because that is the way the educator is teaching? It just so happens that educators generally teach students how the educators themselves learned best or teach in a form that they remember helping them retain information from their former teachers best. Should our classrooms be run in this fashion? No. Teachers should make, to the best of their ability, a syllabus that will dive into different ways people learn with every lesson in order to help every student succeed better. Grades are personal, shouldn’t classes be? I believe grades, attitudes, and test scores will be affected dramatically in the most positive ways.

I know my suggestion is harder for educators who teach more classes and a larger number of students because it would be harder to make the classroom more personal for every individual. K-12 and smaller colleges and Tech-schools would be easier to transition because teachers have a subject matter to stick to but may teach however they deem fit, within limits.

This is a good idea because more students will feel like they can achieve more, causing a domino effect. Students will also feel more comfortable in the class setting because they would feel as though someone understands, cares and wants to help them. More students will become vocal about questions, suggestions, problems, and their personal interests. Educators will also be learning, furthering their ability to help more students. We will become more aware of the situations people are in and the different ways of education, discovering more about our world, our pupils, and ourselves. Students won’t dread coming to school, will have fun and in turn, retain more information and life-skills. The discovery and strengthening of self-confidence will aid in the progress of new interests. In doing this, students will be able to explore the world and make important decisions in their lives. The students who have all of this on their side will be more informed and be able to make changes in themselves and their world.

Basically my thesis is:

Students will generally do better in every class and will achieve more in the classes that use different teaching methods in order to help each student tap into their potential.

This is because:

…students will have more fun and won’t dread coming to school.

…an educator implements different learning styles properly to the best of their ability to further the aid of the student’s education later in their lives.

…students will become more vocal about things and become confident.

…students will gain more life-skills to further themselves later in their lives

…educators will be learning alongside the students because a real education never stops teaching.
