What’s Wrong with a Plain Old GCSE?
I’m doing my GCSE’s at the moment, and my school is forcing me to take additional exams I don’t even want to do.
This may just sound like a rant now, but I turned up to the maths function skills exam. (Time which would have been better spent revising for my real maths exams) That’s more than I can say for a few people. But the school didn’t do anything about them. Why should they? Their loss. So after seeing the teachers reactions to the lack of entrants in the exams, and after having to sit through a pointless hour and a half with a broken caculator, I decided it was best if I didn’t go to the I.T Function skills exam, which is 2 hours long, and directly before my biology GCSE, instead, I thought it would be best if I could revise in the morning. So I got up at 9, which is when the exams started, and opened my biology book, when lo and behold, the phone rings. It’s school. Aparrently I should be at school and I’m not. My mum, well aware of what’s going on, but horrendus and confrontation, panics and says I’ll be in shortly. So, without a shower, I trudge to school, enter the exams an hour late, finish early and go off to do my biology exam wholly unprepared.
It’s time for the government and schools to learn that it’s all well and good to encourage people to achieve their best, but for some, they can manage on their own. I know what I want to do in life, so don’t support me with pathetic exams that distract me from my important ones!
Thank you for listening to this wonderful rant.

Wow, they really made you do that? I did my GCSEs in June as well just like you (Good luck for results day!!! I’m so totally bricking it!) and I did about 11 of them which I didn’t really mind because I actually don’t mind those optional subjects. Agree with you about IT though! For us, IT is a full course and its compulsory and it is such a categorical waste of time, it’s unreal! I could have done another extra GCSE (no actually) instead of wasting precious moments of my life doing IT. And functional skills exams for you lot? Really admire you not going for it at the start (it was funny in a warped way). I think we should be allowed to pick our own amount of exams that we want to do. Whether its 2 or 20, we should be allowed. And what is it with making us do exams that are useless? General studies in A Level…hellooo? Unis don’t even care about it.
But yeah, even though this is a rant, this is a superb article and I really do agree with you.
