Why More Adults are Returning to School

With the rapid changes sweeping over society, it is surprising that more adults are not entering the education system. A failing economy, outsourcing of jobs, downsizing, advancing technology, and any of dozens of other changes are driving more adults back into the educational system. The type of education sought is a varied as the reasons to be there.
General Equivalency Diploma
Many adults are heading back to get a G.E.D. for the high school level diploma. Without this credential, very few other educational opportunities are available. Many adults exited the public school systems to start a family or get a job. These people are now finding themselves without the skills and education to keep up with what today’s job market demands.
Frequently, within a few weeks to a few months, a high school equivalency diploma can be earned. This is not only a major step toward higher educational pursuits, it is often a major boost to the persons self-confidence and self-image.
Specialized Vocational Degrees and Certifications
Community colleges and technical schools are filling up with adults looking to prepare for a new career field. Training in heating and air conditioning, electronics, and various mechanical skills are programs that last two years or less. These programs fit nicely into rehabilitation programs and government programs for workers who have lost their jobs due to foreign competition.
One and two year nursing programs are also attracting large numbers of candidates for enrollment. Programs like these are relatively short compared to the potential earnings after completion. Nursing and medical assistants are also brief adult programs that give easy entrance into a job market with a labor shortage. These last two types of programs are usually less than 3 months in length.
Four Year Degree Programs
Adults are pouring into bachelor degree and degree completion programs. These adults are looking for career advancement more than a new career. Many are trying to get themselves into a recession proof employment situation. Teaching is a popular choice for many adults who are considering a change of direction.
However, many who have worked for years with an associates degree are seeing the need to upgrade their education to move up the corporate ladder. Some of these are also wanting to add more lateral flexibility into their job choices. Frequently adding that next level degree onto the resume makes the difference between employment and unemployment.
Advanced Degree Pursuits
At this level, it is all about the money. People are wanting to get that raise that comes with a masters degree or even a doctorate. In some instances, it may even be a second advanced degree to increase their value by widening their expertise power. An advanced degree, such as, an MBA can give someone a real leg up on the competition for management level jobs. This is even more true if a certification like a CPA can be stacked on top.
