Park Ridge has an annual go cart race each year on the day before Memorial Day. It is in the honor of the Indianapolis 500.

The procedure is simple.  The age in order to race is eighteen until fifty -years old. The go carters have to ride fifty laps around on the track.  And the winner of driving fifty laps non stop, wins a check for five-hundred dollars.

The race was to start at one o’clock in the afternoon. The people who were participating in the race were so excited and so nervous, they were all in their cars at five minutes to one.

At one o’clock sharp, the gun went off and everybody started racing.

Around and around on the track, the go carters raced. The engines were so loud, that one would have to wear earplugs in order to tolerate the noisy engines.

There was one young woman named Carly Hochberg who was taking the lead. In fact she was going so fast, that she was losing conrol of her go cart. All she could think of, was to win that five-hundred dollars. Hochberg was poor and she could  really use the money to pay her bills and buy things for herself.

Then fate hit. Hochberg collided with another go cart. Frantically, Hochberg slammed on the brakes, but she did a donut and notoriously crashed into a wall head first so hard that she died.

No comments were made by anybody. The Park Ridge race was to be stopped. Nobody would win this year. They were all comanded to leave their go carts.

A friend of Hochberg is filing a lawsuit on Park Ridge for wrongful death.
