Black History Month
Is Black History Month still necessary?
Here it is February again. Trouble with that is the singuar notion that those of the African American persuasion deserve an entire month for their own History.
The History of African Americans is very important to the building of the United States. So is the History of Chinese Americans, Hispanics, and Irish Americans. Do all these groups get an entire month to tell everyone in the United States that they are so important that their personal History should be given special treatment?
I don’t believe that any History is any more important than any other History. It is a shame that still, after how far the United States has come, that the African American community still has such low self-esteem that they need to be boosted up with all the hype involved in providing media coverage and special interest education in the schools. No single group of people should be singled out for special attention. That makes the rest feel small and insignificant. The Chinese Americans, Hispanics, and Irish Americans, among others, have the right to good self-esteem as much as the African Americans. It seems that the best way to integrate is to stop segregating.
To have African American History Month is to say that one group should be singled out. Each person, regardless of the color of their skin has net worth and value and their Historical stories are no less significant than those of the African American community.
We do not owe anything to anyone who lives here. If an African American person believes themselves entitled because they were born here, then shame on them. If a Puerto Rican believes the government owes them a living they should go back from whence they came. If I say that I live here and I want Uncle Sam to foot my bills and pay my living then shame on me. We are here to break our backs and work our butts off to take care of ourselves, regardless of who we are.
Teach our children History. Not Black History, or White History, or Texas History, but History. The world is full of it and it is all important and valuable for the growth of our world. Stop the segregation. Start the integration of views and knowledge. When we stop alienating, we will start more embracing.
