Is America Embarrassed by Diversity in the Media?
Questioning why American commercials seem to feature a lot of white females and not other ethnic groups for specific products.
Is America ashamed of its diversity? It seems the majority of the television shows and commercials feature a lot of white females. Are we so far gone that we are having to force feed one sided commercials with unrealistic looking white females that usually turn out to be super skinny, blond, and usually portrayed as the bimbo types. We don’t celebrate the diversity of what America really is. There’s other ethnic backgrounds other than white and this is the sad part of the media because they show you commercials that are tailored to the white audience when some of the users of products that are used other ethnic groups use them as well. There has to be a limit to being force-fed the same ethnic group and demand that we show other ethnic groups.
The magazines you read show more white female models than any other ethnic group. America is the melting pot of diversity, but it doesn’t reflect what the media shoves out there. It’s disappointing that many of the magazines that are read feature a lot of white females when they’re unrealistically skinny and this is why so many girls are resorting to destructive ways to keep up with society’s idea of beauty that is white, blond, and thin. What can we as a society do to change that? We should start by writing to magazines demanding that they stop using only white models and use other ethnicities to keep it fair and balanced that there are other ethnicities besides white. You turn on the TV and many of the nighttime dramas like the defunct shows “The OC”, Beverly Hills, 90210, Melrose Place, and others weren’t exactly being too balanced since they showed minorities living in lower class communities or even from the ghetto.
Most of those shows featured all white overly-privileged rich kids from California and other affluent neighborhoods. Again this is highly unrealistic because the only two shows that give a more realistic look to living was Roseanne and The Cosby Show since they showed you how middle class America really lived. Is America ready to have sitcoms or nighttime soaps where the cast is a different ethnic group or mixed race. In the early mid-90s there was a sitcom called True Colors where it featured a black man married to a white woman and his two sons and her mother and daughter, but it was later canceled which clearly explained that America wasn’t ready to see an interracial couple on prime time TV in lead roles. At the time this country wasn’t going to embrace diversity in TV or print media. Even now it’s still hard for some people to accept the fact that this world is very unique in terms of the ethnic backgrounds of so many people and how you now have shows like “George Lopez” where you feature a normal Hispanic-American family headed by a professional working man.
