Is America Embarrassed by Diversity in the Media?

Questioning why American commercials seem to feature a lot of white females and not other ethnic groups for specific products.

Margaret Cho was the lead in her then semi-successful sitcom All American Girl where the cast was Asian-American, and that too was later canceled since we’re so accustomed to viewing shows where the lead actors are white we’re not ready to view sitcoms and nighttime soaps with actors in lead roles other than secondary roles who are of different ethnic backgrounds. This also reflects into the fact that half the girls who write into magazines like Seventeen and others are white and that they seem to have all the problems when girls of other races have problems with boys, sex , love, and just general issues with life.

This will be a start to accepting other ethnicities in the media instead of always featuring stuff geared towards a white audience and begin to embrace the diversity in this country that has become a virtual melting pot of ethnic backgrounds, languages, and cultural traditions and to work towards putting more shows out featuring middle class working minorities on TV and sitcoms. Even the soap operas on tv are showing blacks, Hispanics and few Asians in secondary roles where the controlling wealthy family of the show is white. Are whites feeling like they’re being slowly pushed out of society since they’re becoming the minority? Hollywood and print media are still slow to accept diversity in terms of television shows that are not always geared towards a white audience. There are beautiful African-American, Hispanic-American, and Asian-American women in this world, but that’s being overshadowed by the media trying to re-emphasize that white women are the most coveted when in fact they’re butchering themselves to look like black and Hispanic women by trying to get the naturally large, full breasts, hips, and other features that African-American and Hispanic women have naturally with no kind of cosmetic surgery.

What would it take for Hollywood and the print media to stop cashing in on white females and to be forced to see there are beautiful Black, Hispanic, and Asian women and that they’re just as beautiful and talented. When we embrace diversity in America we’ll begin to eliminate the racism that exists in this society.
