Tamil in Mauritius

This article is about Tamil culture.

The Tamil Hindus who came from the southern state of Tamil Nadu were brought to Mauritius from the French port of Pondicherry in South Eastern India. These Tamils were part of  a labour force to work as skilled craft men for the construction of the French colonial buildings nad port in the city of Port Louis in Mauritius. They were small in number but an influx of Tamil indentured labourers in the 1830s not only increase geographic ancestry but also a linguistic and cultural heritage inherent to their religious practices. The Tamil religion presence was soon apparent ni the sugar estate they could secure land for shrines and were later able to build a temple.

Because of the language cultural difference, and because to some,Bhojpury was never heard of,they,as a group took interest in learning the English, and French language the preferred to speak the most common understood language,Tamil, and this had impacted on those families who could speak Bhojpuri. The population oof the Bhojpuri language declined among the second generation of the Hindu Tamil population in Mauritius. It also followed that the third generation of the Hindu Tamil had no interest in the Bhojpuri language. From my personal experience, most of my Hindu Tamil friends preferred to speak Creole language than the Bhojpuri. This is predominantly community in Britain.
