The War for American Soil

by TonyBear in Ethnicity, November 20, 2009

The newly acquired western lands were once believed to be deserts and unusable. But, news that came back from those who settled in the west had a completely opposite view. The land west was actually very fertile and could sustain life and civilization. Afterwards, the US government continued to take advantage of Native Americans on an ongoing fight for land. They were very successful in completing their goal because they were simply better than the Natives.

The United States recognized the Native American’s as sovereign nations. This meant that the US government could create treaties and have paternalistic authority over the Natives. The US government has continuously harassed the Natives into giving up their lands and moving westwards for their own needs. This point in time was no different than the last. In the 1850’s, the government established reservations which were dedicated to the Natives. These reservations were scattered around the country, specifically in areas not suitable for American growth. In other words, the lands given to the Natives were completely useless, they were infertile and many who lived there had problems sustaining life. This policy was one of the “successful” ones which worked for a period of time. This specific policy was mainly successful because it scattered the tribes throughout the country. Rebellions could not be made because tribes were not united and had other problems to worry about such as survival. Furthermore, the US government received the prize that they were after; the fertile lands.       One policy which did not work so well, revolved around the ruthless slaughter of buffalos. The Native Americans moved quietly when their land was taken away, but when their buffalo became scarce, the Natives revolted. This policy did not work well because it endangered the buffalos which were a big part in the lives of Native American. This led to an uprising against the white settlers. The Natives could always bear the pain to move around the country, but they could not bear the loss of their buffalo. Buffalo in the lives of Native Americans were extremely important because buffalo was used as food and was even used to make household items including weapons and clothing. Many Natives united together under the cause of protecting their buffalo. Natives attacked white settlers and destroyed properties. The whites retaliated in a ruthless massacre of many Natives. These actions started a feud between the two. A conflict grew between Natives and white settlers mainly over the issue of buffalo which soon evolved into many other problems. The US policy in this specific area failed. It left many Natives and white settlers dead, properties were destroyed, and brought back problems between Natives and the US government.
