When I Hate Being Black

Sometimes I get angry at my race.

Politicians beg for our vote and promise so many things, but what about these children. What about Gangs. Growing up in Harlem myself, I never knew these dangers. I was raised by just my mom, but was taught right and wrong, and trust me you didn’t want to do wrong. Where did this malfunction in raising children come from. I struggle everyday with my children and school, and work and volunteering, but I am here for my children and make sure they are well rounded, well respected kids. I want the best for them. I want to have a reason to say “I ‘m Black and I’m Proud!!!”

I believe that it really takes a village to raise a child and the village really needs to start working together to save these kids and their kids before it is too late. Morre youth programs need to be started, they need guidance and self esteem work. They need to find a reason to be proud and follow that.

Needless to say that after getting back on the train, I thanked God for my small town. It is not the best place on Earth, but my children are safe here and don’t have to fear their own. In fact in this small town, which is why I stay here, my children have friends of all colors and don’t think of the difference. My 5 year old daughter tells me that everyone is the same color, just different shades. I love that.

I think your problems have nothing to do with your race and a lot to do with you personally. Germans don’t feel ashamed to be German because of Hitler. Chinese don’t feel ashamed to be Chinese because of Mao. Stupidity and crude behavior are no respecters of persons.

I sometimes hate being black too, and wish that I was never born. Being black is embarssing. I hate the way my people behave and how I am automatically grouped with them even though I fit none of the stereotypes. Sometimes I hate God for making me black.

Omg, Angela…I feel EXACTLY the same as you do. The words you used couldn’t be more precise in how I feel. God help us both!

THIS IS JUST MY OPINION, DON’T JUMP DOWN MY THROAT:

no one wants to be categorized with negative stereotypes just upon being simply looked at. it sux! i’m ‘mixed’ & i don’t particulary like being viewed as someone who depends on government assistance, can complete any sentence in ebonics, watch bet, wont be able to pay rent/bills on time or any other “black stereotype”. and i’m sure the same goes for any other race, but either the other races don’t care as much or the impact of their history isn’t viewed as significant as ‘black history” just to turn out the way is some cases that is has. and i only say that cuz no other race (to my limited knowledge) contributed (by choice or not) as much as blacks have to the building of america. it just sux that all that hard work is greeted by todays negative stereotypes cuz some black people are comfortable being viewed “that way”. well i’m not, and i work hard on being veiwed as “semi” intellegent as well as having respect for myself, its totally disheartening when i am put into the same category as those who i feel dont have any respect for themselves “the ghetto-rats” “the ‘girl-friend this & that” etc. it doesnt seem to happen with asias or hispanics as much, well except for the recent middle-eastern stereotypes, sometimes i think they have it just as bad with being associated with terroism, even if their whole family was raised in america & they’re christian. guilty by ancestrial association.

like, going into a job interview, he interviewer wouldnt associate a korean with N.korea, but its more likely to associate a black person with a lack of work ethics, proned to have an attitude or unable to find a baby sitter, even tho it will never be verbally known, the water cooler would hear it all. i dunno, it just seems like thats the way the world is, and it sux for those who are trying to well for themselves.

Being Black sucks, period. I can’t even be my true self as a Black person. The majority rules, and are the standard, and unfortunately when you are the Black, the majority is garbage.
