Why Michael Jackson Can Never be “America’s Mohammed”?

 MJ for all his musical genius was a man who never owned up to himself. An African American who aspired to be in a white skin, he always seemed to portray himself as what he believed was socially acceptable, and not who he actually was! Perhaps his acceptability as the world’ biggest pop-star of all times was facilitated by his changed skin color and to that extent he may be justified in hankering for acceptance by undergoing plastic surgeries to change his skin color. For all the liberalism that the West professes, its subconscious could still not accept a black man as a living cultural icon that they would love as God!

Mohammed for many is a way of life. He inspired people to live by certain ideals. MJ on the other hand lived by other people’s ideals.  MJ was a man with a deeply troubled childhood and this reflected in his adult personality. One outcome of this was his obsession with his appearance, leading him to undergo many surgeries to change his skin color, the shape of his nose, lips and sundry other alterations that if undergone by any other individual would have eventually led him to question his own identity after some time.

Deepak Chopra, a medical doctor and friend of Jackson’s for 20 years, once said about him: “What became his compulsion with cosmetic surgery was an expression of self-mutilation, a total lack of respect for himself.” MJ’s only identity was that of a popular entertainer, but beyond that as a person he had already hollowed himself out by the time he became a heartthrob of millions across the world!
