Why Some People Dislike Americans
This article is written for those Americans who are aware of the negative stereotypes against Americans and want to change them. This article is written for those Americans who genuinely want to understand why some people, and some nations dislike Americans or America itself.
To start, PLEASE do not view this as an “Anti-American” link.. obviously if I hated the USA, I would not be bothered to share this information.
Whenever the topic comes up that Americans are not well liked by others you usually get one of two reactions from Americans involved in the conversation. Often they act defensive and say it is because the people of other nations are jealous. Other times they just get defensive. Very rarely will you find an American who wants to understand where this hatred comes from… and there in is the problem.
Fair enough – nobody wants to hear that they are disliked, but equally so nobody likes to get that slap in the face of “Oh, you’re just jealous” particularly when it may not be true.
I have traveled to over a dozen countries (lived in three), and work in an area frequented by tourists. It is not uncommon for people to express their opinions of Americans (often to my husband who is an American and must try to act hospitable in the face of their outbursts against Americans). I can assure you of all the things said against America and Americans, I have never once heard anything related to jealousy.
Most non-Americans are not jealous of the USA (or Americans), those who are, well they are the ones who try to immigrate to the USA. Most people outside of the USA have genuine concerns for the way the USA is behaving worldwide, or for the consumption that takes place within the country, or for the way Americans treat other people of the world. These are often worldly people who may know more about the USA than Americans know about the rest of the world.
Let me point out an incident that took place while I was on Holiday in California. I was in the hotel swimming pool with a couple of girls my age. I asked where they were from. I think it was some place in Texas. I knew were Texas was. They asked where I was from. I said Edmonton, Alberta. They had no idea where this was. Now I can understand them not knowing where Edmonton is, but not knowing where Alberta is.. I mean it borders their country! This is one of the issues the people of the rest of the world often have with Americans – they lack a general knowledge of the rest of the world.

Interesting points of view and opinions. As an American I can say I dislike the road our leaders are taking and the policies they are making. Yes, many Americans are rude but with a husband in the military I have traveled too and seen rude people all over the world. It is sad to be grouped together as a bunch most others hate. Brenda, you do write the most thought provoking articles.

Very thought provoking. One observation I have made is that some Americans are very surprised to hear that their nation is disliked. They think that everyone in other countries would rather live in America if they could. That could be because so many people are trying to get into America – legally or otherwise.
I was surprised at the anger that we received from Americans when Canada’s leaders decided not to join in the war against Iraq. I think it took a few years before they saw the wisdom of our hesitance to join a hastily and IMO ill-planned attack.
Some astute observations of our southern neighbours.

My dear goodness, you are so right! Personally, American hegemony when it comes to world affairs gets on my nerves, and that lack of knowledge of the rest of the world, not caring at all what goes on elsewhere, can really be so crude.

Very true. Although I’ve got plenty of American friends who certainly don’t fit the stereotype, the sad thing is I’ve seen twice as many who do.
My family has a book of “Americanisms” that we’ve heard at tourist sites around the world (actually I must get around to publishing an article full of those) and honestly they don’t show the country in a good light. Nor do 90% of Hollywood movies, certain Republican politicians, and anecdotes from wars. To be honest, I find it hard to beleive anyone could think the rest of the world is “jealous” of the States.

It is good to listen to other peoples view of Americans and try to understand it. The view is always different on the other side. I’m an american but was born in England, I have family in London and hear them speak about greed in America. Europeans in general have negative views about America. So do Jamaicans. I even have family members who won’t stop complaining about America. But quess what? They wouldn’t leave America is you paid the a million dollars.
I had a British friend who told me that America was too harsh for me and I should go back to England where I would be appreciated. He said that Americans were beasts lacking in sensitivities. I was totally relaxed and had little comment. I was not offended. All I said was I love it here and would not be leaving. Anywhere we live there will be problems. We can’t hop from country to country looking for paradise.
Let people talk about America, it’s called communication and we would learn a lot by listening. Why get upset, people will always talk. It’s a fact of life.
This is a good article. It’s important. I agree we may be too self centered lacking in knowledge about other countries.

I am not a world traveler but I do read and read more, so I understand what you are saying. I do believe the class of Americans you meet as tourists are not the average American. People who have money expect to pay for the best. The people I know would never be rude or pushy. They would never make outrageous demands. We are the working class and raise our families to be respectful. I preach use what you have, wear it out, use it up. I believe we should take as little as possible and protect our resources. Hopefully people are beginning to pay attention.

Hmmm. I have lived in Europe for ten years and they found our politics horrible. As we do. But English TV made a statement, “We don’t like Americans, but we love the money they spend here.” And how many times is America asked to give to calamities, other countries and to give, give, give. I guess if the shoe fits, wear it, but anywhere I have traveled, I found some good things, some bad things. To read something similar about the Dutch, read the “Undutchables.” Some good points in article, but overall, I haven’t found many people running to the borders to get OUT, and I do see many foreigners here. Hmmmm, one more time.
Support the troops doesn’t make someone a war monger, now does it??? And slapping on (how does one do that?) a magnet on the car. What state are you in? I haven’t seen a magnet yet on a car; decals yes, by mothers, who love their relative in the service. Sorry if you or anyone takes offense to that.
I guess if we are so bad, it is best you live where you are, keep writing such articles, travel to perhaps France, and maybe watch their behavior. And then to another country. As I say, there is good and there is bad, depends on what you are looking for. I love America, and no apologies, my friend. No magnets, no stickers, no flags, no parades. Just a love for a country still growing, and learning as we go.

You could also add “loud, etc.” to your list. And trust me, I’m married to a Brit–I’ve heard this.
The thing is–we (my husband and I) stayed at a hotel in Monterey (that’s in CA) where we had to share the bathroom with other patrons. No-one made a fuss there.
Also, I notice that Europeans and even our Canadian neighbors don’t really bother to find out much about us. I mean look–how hard can it be to find out that we are a federal system and take that very seriously and that the very term “Americans” do ____ makes no sense? You mean New Yorkers, Californians and Texans all in one breath? Really? I mean wouldn’t it be nice if the world-wise Europeans ever bothered to actually find out about the Americans (whom incidentally Europeans have been stereotyping since Ben Franklin’s day as war-mongering, boorish, and not knowing anything beyond our borders). It’s because Ben Franklin knew how to exploit these stereotypes that he was such a great American ambassador. He really took the Europeans (especially the French) for a ride…
Oh, and the rudest tourists I personally ever met happen to be the Italians. They literally nearly tried to force my would-be husband and me off the little touring boat in San Francisco–despite the fact that we were first in line.

Inna

” Put down your flag for a minute” that’s funny. To say we’re the best country in the world is a very bad idea. We are one among many and others have merit too. Good re-read for me.
