2012: The Last Date of the Mayan Calendar
The Mayans believed that the earth would be reborn on December 21, 2012. Some modern day astronomers take this to mean an ending of civilization as we know it. There are also predictions from some history scholars that a polar shift will occur about this same time.
Our 2012 story gets really complicated by the work of Robert Harrington, an astronomer with the US Naval Observatory. Harrington was convinced that there was a planet in our solar system that was yet to be discovered (referred to as Planet X). In 1991 he traveled to Black Birch New Zealand with the expectation that he could actually photograph Planet X from this vantage point. Zecharia Sitchin became interested in Harrington’s work because it did seem to dovetail with his own work on the planet Nibiru (sometimes referred to as Planet X by his followers). Keep in mind that Harrington was a scientist whose work was based on verifiable evidence whereas Sitchin is more of a literary author involved in translating ancient texts. The only connection between Harrington and our 2012 story is that he postulates the existence of Planet X, and nothing more. Harrington died of cancer in 1993: there was nothing out of the ordinary about his death.
Two years after Harrington’s death a web site titled Zeta Talk was developed by Nancy Lieder, a self proclaimed messenger for extraterrestrials she calls Zetas. Ms. Lieder became very popular among people looking for a doomsday prophet. She claimed that the Zetas informed her of an impending disaster to the planet earth by the passage of a planet called Planet X and that Harrington was assassinated as a means of hiding the truth of the existence of planet X. There is not one shred of evidence that Harrington’s death was anything other than death from cancer.
There is a delightful soap opera quality to all of this with a huge cast of characters including some well known late night radio talk show hosts. It would take volumes to describe all the actors on the Planet X stage. But how does all of this relate to the Mayan calendar? The only relationship is the concept that something of biblical proportions is going to occur to humanity within the near future. Is there any reality to any of this and if so what should you do about it? Some people spend a considerable amount of time worrying about possible future events and consequently lose precious moments that could be spent with loved ones. John Lennon said it best; “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”

Very interesting exploration of the various theories concerning 2012. I smiled at your term “net guru.”
You are very well-read.

Well written. You are a master writer-painter on your own right. Well let’s see about that, after all I’m not psychically gifted to foretell the future but when it the planet survives till 2013, it will be my “glory days”. I always like number 13.
