Aphrodite
Goddess of love.
Image via Wikipedia
Let’s talk about Aphrodite; she was the Goddess of Love, Beauty, Fertility and Desire
You may well know her better by her Roman name, Venus.
She was the daughter of Zeus, and there are many tails and stories surrounding Aphrodite about her birth and life.
One of the stories of her birth was that she was born rising from the watery foam around Cyprus where in modern times the Venus DE Milo was found, She married Hephaestus A dark haired short man, who was a bit of a boozer and had difficulty walking due to malformed feet, she was a real beauty so he didn’t do so bad for himself did he?
Marriage for women in ancient Greece wasn’t so much about the love, which might explain why she married him.
Aphrodite was said to incite feelings of love and lust wherever she went.
She slept with both gods and mortals and of course was dead keen on Adonis
Another story is that Paris chose her, as the fairest of the three goddesses (the others were Hera and Athena) and she rewarded him for giving her the Golden Apple (which is where the idea of the today’s award system came from) by giving him the love of Helen of Troy.
During her live Aphrodite produce many children including Ares god of war.
The Fates, who decided when and where anyone should be born and what you will do with your life gave Aphrodite one divine duty, to make love.
And because of this is properly why, she was also the patron goddess of prostitution.

I’ve always beem fascinated by Greek and Roman mythology. I think what we today sometimes forget is that it’s mythology to us but it was religion to them.

A wonderful job of story telling once again…this time going beyond your own imagination. I, however, prefer to believe, she was not a myth, but is real and living today in or near the Tiger Woods complex in Windemere, Florida…driving distance from me.

I have always been fascinated by Greek mythology as well. A very interesting and well-written article. I tend to incite those types of feelings of lust and desire especially among the triondites

I live in her birth place…never heard about the prostitution part before. She is the icon of the island, the goddess of love is sought after by the tourists and loved by the residents.
