Are Giant Anacondas Real?

Anacondas up to 28 feet in length have been documented. But are even longer ones lurking in the Amazon rain forest?

In 1907, Colonel Percy Harrison was leading an expedition on the Rio Negro when he claimed to have shot a sixty-two foot Anaconda.  Harrison produced no body.  Throughout the twentieth century, reports of Anacondas up to 150 feet in length have persisted.  The average length of these snakes is seventeen feet while the longest one ever documented is twenty-eight feet.

There is no evidence to support claims of Anacondas longer than thirty feet.  For over a hundred years, the Wildlife Conservation Society has offered a reward for the live delivery of any snake over thirty feet long.  Although the prize money is now up to $50,000, no one has yet claimed the reward.  While it is possible that there are giant Anacondas, it has not been proven.

The giant Anaconda is a combination of fact and myth.  Remember, even a seventeen-foot-long snake can mess up your whole day.  There are certainly serpents that can eat a human.  However, the 150-foot Anaconda is almost definitely a myth.  On the other hand, it is hard to discount thousands of sightings by people who live in the Amazon rain forest.

A million flies cannot be wrong.
