Bear Totem Animal

by Raven Quill in Folklore, January 22, 2009

My interpretation of the bear totem and what it represents.

Bear

Element: Earth

Key Concepts To Ponder: Maternal, strength, solitude, devotion, vision quests, taking time to rest, listening to intuition, and grounding.

Bear is a very powerful totem. Not only are bears incredibly strong and courageous, they are also very tender and loving when it comes to caring for their young. This shows that people with bear totems are able to stand strong when they need to but they are also able to show compassion and unconditional love as well.

Bears are very spiritually aware and in tune with their surroundings. They can sense when the wheel of the year begins rotating long before other animals do. This enables them to store a large layer of fat in their systems to feed off of during hibernation. Individuals with bear as a totem are usually very spiritually gifted and aware of everything that is happening around them. They are able to see the big picture rather than being limited by tunnel vision and closed-mindedness.

Bear is a wonderful reminder of the importance of taking time for yourself when needed. Many times people get so busy or spend so much time doing things for others that they forget to take time for themselves. Maternal nurturing and rejuvenation are very important, as it is much easier to help others when you are feeling good as well.

Messages:

If bear has come into your life as a totem perhaps it is a good time to ensure that you are moving forward on your path with courage and dedication. Sometimes strength and determination are needed to stay on your charted path when being pulled in many different directions. Bear reminds us that focus and grounding are necessary in order to accomplish things within the physical realm. Individuals with bear as a totem will find that they are embraced with grounded energy to help center themselves. Another important lesson bear teaches is that while hibernation is necessary at times, it is not a good idea to stay in hibernation for longer than necessary. Hibernation ensures time away from the everyday world to rejuvenate, rest, and spiritually connect to higher power, sometimes it is easier to stay in that space rather than dealing with the real world. Hibernate for the time you need to heal yourself but then take the healing energy and lessons learned during your isolation and implement them into your daily life.

Are you having a hard time focusing on tasks that need to be completed? Have you felt frustrated because you do not seem to have any time for yourself? Have you been yearning to do spiritual activities but just cannot seem to find the time? Are you isolating yourself because it’s easier than dealing with the real world? Bear has very sacred and ancient magick that will help you overcome these problems if you embrace her in your life and sacred space.
