Better Than Rubies: Devotion for Monday July 29, 2013

What this devotion suggests is that men and women with ideas rule the world and there is nothing that can be compared with wisdom.

Better Than Rubies: Devotion for Monday July 29, 2013

Text: Proverbs 8:11 – For wisdom is better than rubies, and all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.

Yesterday we saw how Jesus grew in wisdom because he was learning daily from the word of God. The result was all round increment. Today, our text says wisdom is better than rubies. Wisdom means good sense, wise decision, accumulated learning or sayings. Rubies are red gemstone used in making jewelries, wrist watches, etc. Wisdom described by Solomon as being better than rubies simply means that it is invaluable. Job 28:15 says, “It cannot be purchased for gold, nor can silver be weighed for its price.” See also Psalm 19:10 and Proverbs 3:14, 15.

Proverbs 4:5, 7 and 16:16 admonish us to go for wisdom because its proceeds are greater than the proceeds from silver and gold. Solomon who said this knew what he was saying. When God gave him a blank Cheque (Check) to ask for what He can do for him. He chose wisdom and other things were added to him (1 Kings 3:5 – 14). Wisdom brought him fame and riches. Family Bible Notes says “The smallest measure of true wisdom is better than all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; for it makes us blessed here, and prepares us for eternal blessedness hereafter.” This is a great lesson for us because the glory of the world fades away. There is nothing that lasts forever. Most of the things that take our attention from serving God faithfully are just for a while.

Beloved in Christ, what are the things that matters most to you? Wisdom from God is the best assurance of our successful living here on earth. With wisdom you can excel in all your endeavours. Remember that those who rule the world are men and women of wisdom. Wisdom cannot be bought with gold or precious stones, but is only the gift of God. Ask God for it today.

Food for Thought: Proverbs 4:7 – Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.

Prayer: Grant me wisdom O Lord, to enable me live a fulfilled life in Jesus name. Amen
