Camelot, King Arthur’s Castle

Camelot was King Arthur’s own castle where he lived with his wife Guinevere.

Camelot was King Arthur’s own castle where he lived with his wife Guinevere.

Camelot occupies a special role in the mythology, because the castle in many ways acts as a link between 2 different eras. According to the legend, King Arthur lived in the castle, which places a time slot for the 6th century after Christ. Historically, it is an age of which we do not know so much about. The period lies in a kind of historical darkness, primarily containing myths and legends, rather than actual historical data, unfortunately.

The period that comes after the Viking Age is however considerably better elucidated. So should we believe the story of King Arthur? That Camelot was the most beautiful castle in the world, a magnificent edifice of great beauty? A palace which has not known its equal in the world.

The castle was of course primarily a residence for King Arthur and a huge loss of courtiers who surrounded the king. But the castle was also home to the central administration and worked in this way as a kind of super-ministries, where everything from tax collection to the defense and education were planned. The castle is often described as a shining beacon of knowledge, culture and education in an otherwise very dark time.

In this way it seems to function as a sort of bridge between the time around the birth of Christ and Viking Age, which historically both are pretty well covered.
