Champ the United States Loch Ness Monster

Scotland has it’s Nessie and the United States has Champ.

Scotland has its Nessie and we have Champ. It is believed to be living in Lake Champlain which borders New York and Vermont.

Champ was made famous back in 1977 when Sandra Mansi took the photo of the sea monster.

People dating back to Native American Indians have said they have seen this monster of the lake.

Lake Champlain is a very deep lake which does have access to the sea by the St. Lawrence Seaway.

The first sighting recorded took place when Samuel de Champlain came to the lake in July 1609. On his expedition he noted “a 20-foot serpent, with a horse-shaped head and body as thick as a keg.” Since then, sightings of the strange aquatic beast have been reported by over 300 people.

Dennis Hall found a 12 inch long lizard in the lake back on the 70’s. He took it to scientists in Vermont but somehow the reptile was lost. Hall was looking through a book and found a dinosaur that has been extinct for millions of years that looked exactly like the reptile he found.

Numerous photos have been taken of this sea monster but nothing can be explained or found in the lake by scientists.

In 2003 the Discovery channel put microphones in lake Champlain and recorded ticking or chirping sounds much like that of a whale, but those animals do not live in fresh water.

The lake is very large and very deep making it almost impossible to find anything, so for now those lucky enough to capture this creature while crossing over on the ferry or out there for a day of fishing may be the only link we have to Champs final discovery.

That makes me so mad when somebody finds something of scientific value and it “somehow” goes lost.. get real!!!

Canada has Ogopogo, we use to vacation near its home, but I never saw him/her. Nonetheless lake monsters fascinate me.

There are over 250 lakes around the world that claim to harbor ‘a beast’ of some sort. While it may be not worth note, every one of these lakes have things in common; they are or once were connected to the oceans, are deep, cold and once hosted migratory fish.

Champ is interesting. More ’snakelike’ than whale, it may be something different from the typical ‘Nessie’ reports. Curious however that you used four links to the same image of a map and no other images that are available for the subject matter. Anyway, good primer on Champ. :-)

There are still many unknown quantities in our planet-there could even be some undiscovered humans out there-this was great write

I\’ve always been intrigued about the Loch Ness monster but I\’m surprised that America has Champ too! I agree with gaby7 that there are indeed many other mystical creatures on this planet and Champ and Nessie are just the tip of the iceberg. An interesting and well researched read!
