Chinese New Year Mythology

This is just one of the many versions of mythology.

There are many versions of the beginning of Chinese New Year. But the one I am writing would only be one of the many versions there are, so here it goes.

A long time ago, there was a monster named Nian or basically “Year” in Chinese. Nian would come on the first day of New Year to devour livestock, crops and villagers. Its favourite food was children. The villagers were miserable and cried out. A deity came and told them the way to chase this monster away. They had to hang red scrolls on their doors and have red lanterns as Nian was afraid of red. At midnight, they were to light firecrackers as Nian was also afraid of the loud sounds produced from the explosions. Ever since, the Chinese have red on Chinese New Year and light firecrackers on Chinese New Year (Well, that depends whether your area legalises the usage of firecrackers).

So, this is only one version of the many versions there are. Feel free to write the other versions and tell the other members about how Chinese New Year came about.

So here is from me, wishing everyone a Happy Chinese New Year!
