December 21, 2012: What Does It Really Mean?
There are less than three years left until 2012. Is there any truth to the idea that it will be the end of time? This is my take on the spiritual aspect of the ancient Mayan calendar.
I’m sure that almost everyone has heard stories that surround the date, December 21, 2012. The doomsday aspect seems to have caught the attention of many. I have my own ideas about what this date could represent, but first I will share with you information that surrounds this mystery. December 21 is the winter Solstice and the shortest day of the year. Many religious groups celebrate this day, as it is considered a day of rebirth of the Sun, or the Horned God. After this day, the days grow longer and the nights grow shorter. It signifies the promise of a new beginning, the promise of sunshine and warmth that will once again return. The earth will renew itself and life will again reappear from its depths. This has been cause for celebration for thousands of years.
The ancient Mayans were only one civilization of many that celebrated the winter Sun Solstice. They worshipped the Sun and paid close attention to the movement of the planets. They studied the changes and used the information that was collected to measure time. The ancient Mayans kept records of these changes and began to understand the paths the planets and stars would take. They made a calendar called the Tzolkin. It was used to measure the length of life and seasonal changes. This calendar is a 260-day calendar and was one of many different calendars that the Maya used in everyday life. They believed that the path the planets took represented the meaning of life and all that happened. They thought of the galaxy as sacred and spoke of the Milky Way as the Sacred Tree. The Maya calculated the path of the planets up to the date December 21, 2012. That’s where the Tzolkin stops.
On this day, December 21,2012, there will be an alignment of the sun and the Milky Way that present day scientists and astrologers have yet to see. A close conjunction of the Solstice Sun with the crossing point of the Milky Way, Galactic Equator, and the path of the sun, the Ecliptic, will be the event that scientists and astrologers will be watching closely. It will come to resolution at exactly 11:11 a.m. G.M.T. (Greenwich Mean Time). G.M.T. is the prime meridian, the starting time of all time zones. If you are traveling east from the meridian, you will add one hour to each time zone entered. If you are moving west, you will subtract one hour with each time zone entered. So if you live in Nashville, Tennessee you will subtract five hours and the time will be 6:11 a.m. when the event comes to resolution.

the number 21 has been in my life for a long time now. In all my years in school i’ve been number 21 and 3 watches stopped either at 21 minutes or a 21st day. and i went to the 21st chapter in the new testament of the bible, and skipped 21 passages and i happened to get the apocalypse. And now this December 21 thing is freaking me out….

ok it bothers me that no one nows whats going on. i have been raises an american but lived most of my life. i am not 16 years old and i have spent 12 years of my life in mexico. around yucatan to be specific. raised with the mayans. yes there is a calender and yes it means there will be a end to something in 2012 but it has nothing to do with the world ening. but everyone jumps to conclusion when they have not spoken with the mayans. the calander or the ruin chitichenitza. sorry if i spelt that wrong. but it states that, right now there are only a hand full of true mayans. yes there are mayans but they are cross breed with the meixican or another race. the calender tells us that by 2012 they true 100% breed mayans will be gone. its funny that everyone knows what 2012 is but they dont really know what it means. thank you.

i don\’t think it\’s the end of the world. that\’s not to say that NOTHING will happen on dec. 21, 2012. it MAY be the apocalypse. generally we think apocalpyse means the end of the world. but when you actually look it up it means \’to unveil\’ or \”revelation\’. and revelation means to reveal something. it\’s said that things will become known to mankind that we didn\’t know before. such as secrets of a \”higher being\” are revealed. whatever might happen is probably bigger than any of us can imagine. anyone interested in this should just look us the word apocalypes-even use Wikipedia. there is alot written about the end of the world but just read deeper into it. it might give you a different way of looking at what could happen in 2012.

@Ricka Mae Hermogenes No it doesn’t mean people will die. In no way am I saying, nor do I know, that the world will end on this day. I am simply expressing my opinion of what I feel is the meaning of the Mayan prophecy and the scientific end of the scope. Please do some research before you come to any conclusion. This is a natural evolution of the planets.
